SHENZHEN WORLD HEALTH FOUNDATION AWARDS

Introduction

The Shenzhen World Health Foundation Awards recognize outstanding innovation and achievement in advancing the field of global health. By providing recognition and financial support to the recipients, the awards will further their efforts in one or more of the three themes of the World Health Forum 2018: Planetary Health; Innovation; and Equality.

The accomplishments and efforts of the award recipients can be in any facet of global health ranging from technology, healthcare delivery, preventive efforts, mental health, organizational development or any other facet deemed relevant by the Award Committee.

Award

The winners of the SWHF Awards will be celebrated at a dinner reception during the 2018 World Health Forum. In addition to the cash award, all expenses for the award recipient to attend the Forum will be paid by the Forum.

The SWHF Impact in Global Health Award

The SWHF Impact Award recognizes outstanding achievement that has led to measurable impact in improving global health by an established professional working at or retired from an academic institution, government, business or the non-profit sector. A successful nominee is likely to:

  • 1. Have had a career dedicated to leadership in a traditional global health organization, or
  • 2. Have provided leadership to help resolve a major global health issue, or
  • 3. Worked to enhance health equity.

The SWHF Impact Award of $10,000 will go to the honoree’s primary organization for the achievements being recognized.

The SWHF Rising Star Award

The SWHF Rising Star Award recognizes a professional showing extraordinary promise in the global health field through a recent innovation that has shown or shows promise for having significant impact in improving global health.

The Rising Star Award of $15,000 will be divided equally between the individual honoree and his or her organization.

Rules and requirements:

  • WHF 2018 will take place in Langfang, China on November 13-15, 2018.
  • Award winners will be expected to give a short presentation at WHF 2018 on their work in global health.
  • Nominations must be submitted by a third party, not the nominee.
  • Primary consideration will be given to individual nominees, although nominations for an organization will be accepted and considered.

NOMINATION PROCESS

The nomination process for the SWHF Awards is managed by the Shenzhen World Health Foundation Award Committee1. Nominations may be made by anyone working in global health or a related area. The nomination may be submitted by email to: service@whfsz.org. The nominee will be contacted by the SWHF Award Committee and asked to submit more detailed information if the nominee is interested in being considered for the award.

We encourage you to nominate as many people as you would like, but you must submit a separate form for each nomination.

  • (1) Contact information, organizational affiliation, and title of nominee
  • (2) For the SWHF Impact Award:
  • Brief description of the nominee’s contributions to the field of global health. What sets his/ her professional achievements apart in the industry? (250 words or less)
  • How do the nominee’s achievements in global health fit with one or more of the themes of WHF 2018: Planetary Health; Innovation; and Equality? (250 words or less)
  • (3) For the SWHF Rising Star Award:
  • Tell us about the nominee’s educational/ professional background and experience in global health to date. What sets his/ her achievements apart in the industry? (250 words or less)
  • How do the nominee’s achievements in global health fit with one or more of the themes of WHF 2018: Planetary Health; Innovation; and Equality? (250 words or less)
  • How do you anticipate this individual contributing to global health in the future, and how is his/ her current work indicative of this? (250 words or less)
  • (4) Optional: You may include additional materials that offer further context for a nominee’s work, such as links to relevant publications, videos, speaking engagements, etc.

1No member of the SWHF Award Committee may make a nomination.

AWARD SELECTION

All nominees for either award will be contacted to confirm the nominees’ willingness to be considered for the award and to provide the necessary information for the nomination.

All nominees who accept the nomination will be provided with a nomination information request form that asks for a 1000-word statement about the primary global health effort that inspired the nomination, as well as information about the supporting organization and other details. All completed nomination forms will be considered by the Awards Committee.

The Awards Committee will discuss all the nominations and vote on recipients for the two awards. The Awards Committee will present a recommendation for each Award to the SWHF Steering Committee for review. The decision of the SWHF Steering Committee is final.

The determination of the nominees by the Awards Committee and the final determination of the winners by the Steering Committee is completely at the discretion of the Committees and do not represent the opinion or decision of any individual. Neither SWHF nor any of its representatives including the Awards Committee is liable for any actions by the nominees, including the use of the cash awards. If a nominee is not available to be present at WHF 2018 to receive the award, SWHF reserves the right to determine an alternate winner without any obligation to the original nominee.
